The Kite Runner - Khaled Hossieni
For me, the kite runner by Khaled Hossieni is always about the story of Hassan. Not Ameer. Even though the story is being told by Ameer!. Who was the kite runner in the story?? It was Hassan.. Not Ameer. So do the story. I think your perspective of reading a fiction changes a lot as you old. Because as you grow old, you understand and see through the world in its reality. The book published in my teen. But I haven't read it since then. I am reading it in my early thirties after losing a fair amount of battle to the injustice and hypocrisy of this world and to lose and found God again. So a lot of my perspective on the novel is how I see the world and its illusions. And that literally helped. I thought I had lost the ability to cry reading a fiction, but for chapter 5 and chapter 17, I had cried rivers for sure. Whoever comes and goes in the novel, Hassan and Ali stood as a monument for their dignified silence, for their loyalty, for their ability to keep the promise and to live and die for what they had committed. You will never forget a single Hazara in the novel. The marginalized, the oppressed and the sidelined people are always high in the Eyes of God. If you focus out from the micro incidents from the novel and see it as whole, Hassan, Ali and Sohrab, though faced first hand oppression, died a heroic death and that is what they are. It broke my heart to the core after the tragedy faced by Hassan and when asked Amir standing near the closed door, calling him to go somewhere and Amir just asked him to literally get lost. It broke my heart when Hassan asked "what had he done for Amir to hate him like that"!! It broke my heart even more when Amir never got to see Hassan after that. Even after all the humiliations Hassan faced in life, the grace with which he wrote the letter to Amir, the grace of him never ever blaming Amir and the grace of him forgiving every single person.. !! When life gives you a chance, be like Hassan and not Amir. "For you a thousand times Over" !! For Hassan, Amir was always his friend, for Amir the premise clearly showed Hassan was not so!. At least that was what Amir implied when he shared his thought to the writers. The contrast of Soraya and Amir also make it clear. Amir as a child mocked Hassan for being illiterate while Soraya literally taught one , the letters!! I at least thought Sohrab will be spared from the clutches of Assef, but nay!!.. The tragedy has to continue.. And I think the silence of Sohrab for long is an apt punishment for Amir. Until Chapter 17, Baba was godly for me. But I won't say I hated him. He had his own ways of redemption. Sanauber was also not good either. You blame both of them. At least Baba cared a lot for Hassan unlike Amir and he was literally treating him like Son whenever it is possible. You see the grace with which the oppressed people face the harsh realities of life. Ali and Hassan were true believers. The real practicing believers and that is from where their grace comes. While the contrast of the riches, and the Taliban mocking the religion and Quran is more evident. The preach and preach, for example the Baba regarding the theft and In the end he himself turned out to be the one. You read verses from Quran to punish people for adultery, but behind the door you do wretched things!! And they really don’t know whom the God really hates: The hypocrites! The only thing touched me for Amir is him finding his way back to God though I don’t know the depth.. But at least he did. He understood the absolute helplessness of human nature in life!! Hassan, Ali and Sohrab.. You are honored in the court of God.. Hassan for you, I Just wanted to embrace you and wipe your tears for all the time you cried over the incident, the betrayal and when you slept through the days. Hassan you stand tall and wide and after all, you are "The Kite Runner".
